What Did He Say?

A NOTE FROM RAY (Why I May Have Made A Serious Mistake When I Agreed to Work For Tom)
Let me tell you the truth about the self designated “king of clean” Tom Case… I was working two jobs (still am) and a co-worker there at my second job saw me wearing a shirt with the logo of the previous carpet cleaner I was working for. He insisted that I talk to Tom because he has known him since he was 14 and he used to work for him. It all sounded good so I called him. Tom wanted me to ride with him for a day to see if he thought I would be qualified before he hired me (I agreed but I was actually qualifying him).
We went out to Century Village to do a condo there, and although I have to admit I was impressed with his procedures, the carpet didn’t even look dirty and didn’t look too much different when we finished than it did when we got there. Besides, we were using portable equipment on the 4th floor and I was used to using a truck mount.
So after finishing, we said we’d talk but in my mind I was thinking about what a bad choice it would be for me to leave my present employer to work for Tom. After all, even if I was only a helper there, we were always busy. But after some encouragement from my friend at my second job I called Tom to make arrangements to meet with him to hear all the details about pay, etc.
I can remember it like it was yesterday – I walked into Tom’s house and the only furniture I could see in the entire place was a recliner and a t/v!! And there was no carpet or tile, only bare cement floors with nails along the edges. My old boss has a really nice warehouse/office, and now I was really starting to realize what a mistake I’m making. Tom said he was remodeling, but that didn’t make me feel any better.
Then there is his vehicles…he has two nice work vans, but THE GUY’S PERSONAL CAR IS A 1996 SATURN (my old boss drives a new Navigator, and even my car is much newer and nicer than Tom’s). He told me that his daughter drives his new Explorer and he drives her Saturn, but again, I’m wondering? Anyway, so far I’m NOT impressed.
But he gave me some projected income and other promises, and as reluctant as I was, I agreed to join his company. WHAT HAVE I DONE?!!
We worked together for several months before he finally let me go out by myself. I could have handled it after the first week, but he can be quite stubborn and kept telling me that his clients wouldn’t appreciate it if he sent me by myself only after such short training. WHAT EVER!
But on the first day I noticed a big difference in the way things were done. The guy knows how to clean, and he knows his chemicals. He’s a fanatic, a bit of a perfectionist, and expects me to be too. AND THE GUY CAN WORK!!! My old boss never picked up anything heavier than a pencil, but Tom won’t shy away from the physical stuff. Also we are only doing two jobs each day instead of the sometimes 7 or 8 at the other company. Here there was no stress about running late, and it was nice not having to hurry through the jobs only to be late to the next one.
But here’s some more weird things about Tom… he is vegan so his lunch might consist of a carrot or a persimmon, whatever that is, and sometimes I see him eating two pieces of thinly sliced apples with peanut butter in the middle, like he thinks it’s a pbj sandwich or something. He thinks he’s a healthy eater, but you should see him at the chili place eating a plate of vegan chili big enough for three grown men!! WHAT EVER!
Then there is his coffee. He knows where EVERY STARBUCKS AND DUNCAN DONUNTS is in the entire county, and will drive blocks away from where we are in between jobs so he can “catch a buzz”. I get hungry too but I won’t eat any apple/pbj sandwich, or pay $7.00 for a sandwich at Starbucks. So if I’m lucky I can see a fast food place or convenient store from the coffee shop and I’ll have to walk over there since that’s the only way it will happen for me.
By now you’re probably thinking that I hate Tom, but it’s quite the opposite. As weird as Tom is he’s really a good guy and he’s kept every promise he made to me in the beginning. The company is really growing now and I’m happy to be a part of it.
The reason I’m telling you all this is because I’m sure there are NO OTHER CLEANERS out there that do what we do. I’ve learned so much about cleaning and chemistry, and to quote Tom, “you know Ray, you can blow away any other cleaners out there now”, and I agree. I’m not fast and I’ll be in your home until there is nothing I can do better, in fact Tom won’t let me hurry. At the other company we did several “re-dos” each week, but with Tom we not only don’t have that problem, but he makes sure after all of our jobs that the client is happy.
Look, I don’t need to “sell” you on the benefits of using Tom, if you’re reading this you’re already a current client and you already know the differences…

Finally, about Tom, who knows what crazy things he’ll come up with in the future and either expect me to do, or at least put up with, but I’ve learned to humor him and I plan on being here for a long time.
If I haven’t met you yet, I’ll be looking forward to that day!
